About the Fire Blocks
Discover the history and character of Downtown Dayton's most vibrant neighborhood
A Neighborhood
Reborn
The Fire Blocks is a historic district in downtown Dayton centered on East Third Street from Jefferson to St. Clair, extending to Fourth Street. It represents one of the most intact architectural collections in downtown Dayton.
Since 2020, apartments and numerous first-floor retail spaces have opened throughout the district, representing a second rebirth for this storied neighborhood. Today, beautifully restored buildings house modern loft-style apartments while the street level buzzes with locally-owned restaurants, shops, and creative businesses.
Living here means being part of a tight-knit community that celebrates the neighborhood's remarkable history while embracing the energy of urban renewal.

Rebuilt in Grandeur
During the Great Flood of 1913, a gas explosion triggered a massive fire that swept through the area. Aided by the wood frame construction of mid-19th century buildings, the blaze reduced most of the district to rubble.
The district was rebuilt in grand fashion by many of Dayton's prominent business leaders. Large new commercial buildings utilizing fireproof construction methods sprang up in the following years—giving the area its distinctive architecture and its name: the Fire Blocks.
As downtown struggled in more recent decades, the district became mostly vacant. A $100 million redevelopment plan emerged in 2016-2017, eventually being taken over by The Windsor Companies, leading to the vibrant revival you see today.
Each apartment preserves the authentic architectural details of these historic buildings while incorporating modern amenities—a perfect blend of character and convenience.
